Conservation initiatives

From heat vulnerability mapping to community heat kits, we combine data-driven research with grassroots action to protect those most at risk from extreme heat in Southern California.

Heat research & mitigation

We built THRIVE, a heat vulnerability app that maps urban heat islands across the Inland Empire โ€” where the same region can be 10โ€“15ยฐF hotter due to differences in tree cover, pavement, and roofing. Our work was selected for the Congressional App Challenge and the President's AI Challenge, and is mentored by USC and Children's Hospital Los Angeles.

Community action

We distribute heat kits โ€” water, sunscreen, hats, and snacks โ€” to people who lack access to air conditioning or cooling resources, including the unhoused population of Los Angeles. We've distributed hundreds of kits so far, and we've planted 10 oak trees in Chino Hills to build cooler, more resilient communities long-term.

Policy advocacy

Extreme heat is the leading environmental cause of mortality in the US โ€” yet it rarely receives the emergency response it deserves. We use data from THRIVE to advocate for targeted investments in tree canopy, shade, hydration stations, and cooling centers in the neighborhoods that need them most.

Meet Aarav

Growing up in Chino Hills โ€” one of the hottest, most heat-exposed communities in the greater Los Angeles area โ€” Aarav watched neighbors without air conditioning, shade, or resources bear the brunt of 100ยฐF+ summers. A Scout fainting from heat at summer camp in 2024 was the moment that turned concern into action. He founded Conservly, recruited 17 members, built the THRIVE heat vulnerability app (now mentored by USC and Children's Hospital Los Angeles), and launched heat kit drives and tree planting projects across the Inland Empire.
